The Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer mission EarthCARE is an Earth Explorer Core Mission as part of the Living Planet Programme led by the European Space Agency (ESA) and is planned to be launched in 2023. This Master thesis report investigates the technical and programmatic feasibility of a late implementation of a monitoring camera system on-board the EarthCARE satellite and examines the impact on the satellite subsystems. A dedicated requirements document is created for a monitoring camera system including required performance, mechanical and electrical interfaces, parts, materials and processes, applicable environmental conditions and operational and software needs and the proposal for an off-theshelf product is motivated. The potential mechanical and electrical accommodation for the chosen product is studied and the thermal, operational, software-related and data handling constraints are analyzed. This leads to the definition of a verification method and test programme for the qualification of the chosen camera system to comply with the requirements to the system. The assembly, integration and testing (AIT) expenditures are outlined and the resulting costs are estimated. The feasibility of an implementation is discussed with the emphasis on the expectations and requirements that differ from general design and interface requirements to other equipment on-board the satellite, identified risks and costs. Further steps to be taken for a continuation of the project in the next design phase are defined.
