The interaction between the solar wind and the terrestrial magnetic field form the magnetosphere which is comprised of many complex boundaries and distinct plasma regions. On the dayside, the bow shock, magnetosheath, and magnetopause are all dynamically coupled to the parameters of the upstream solar wind and each other. In this seminar, we will discuss how long-term measurements from the Cluster, MMS, and THEMIS missions have significantly advanced our knowledge on the physical process which dictate this coupling. It will be demonstrated that this is a multi-scale issue since global-scale features such as dawn-dusk asymmetries, fluid-scale mechanisms such as Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices, and kinetic processes (e.g. wave-particle interactions) all play major roles. How this all relates to plasma transport to the inner-magnetosphere and ground-based observations will also briefly be addressed, as well as open questions yet to be solved.
