The Department of Industrial Biotechnology of KTH applies biotechnology for sustainable drinking and waste water solutions as well as the production of fuels and chemicals. We have expertise and facilities needed for general microbial physiological studies, microscopy, bioreactor infrastructure from 1-600 L as well as a pilot plant for ozonation and carbon treatment (see photo). Together with their colleagues and (international) collaborators, Dr. Gunaratna Kuttuva Rajarao, Berndt Björlenius and Prof. Antonius van Maris use this toolbox to investigate amongst others:

  • Microbial treatment of waste streams
  • Ozonation, carbon treatment and filtration
  • Impact, persistence and removal of xenobiotics
  • Protein-based coagulation for water purification
