FAQ about tuition fees

What is included in the master's programme tuition fee?

The tuition fee includes courses worth 120 ECTS credits (two year master's programmes) and 60 ECTS credits (one year master's programmes). You can study courses that will not be included in your degree, but you are then liable to pay additional fees (see below for additional information).

In addition to the ECTS credits, the tuition fee paying students and students holding a KTH Scholarship are also covered by the Swedish State's Insurance for fee-paying students FAS+ .

Apart from these benefits, a wide range of study related services are offered such as student health care, student counselling, computer labs, support for students with disabilities, etc.

Is the KTH accommodation rent included in the tuition fee?

No, the accommodation rent is not included in the tuition fee.

My tuition fee status has changed. What do I need to do?

If your student status changes, you need to submit documents that certify the change to: info@kth.se . 

A change in status does not affect the tuition fee for ongoing semesters.

A change in student status (from the following semester) will lead to you no longer being eligible for additional services for tuition paying students (for example guaranteed accommodation, comprehensive insurance and primary health care).

Where do I enter my reference number?

If there is no specific field for the 4-digit reference number, please contact your bank for help. If no field is designated, place the reference number where you see fit (or in an appropriate place) and be sure to include your (student) name so that we may be able to identify the payment.

When will I receive my receipt? I need it to apply to The Swedish Migration Agency:

It could take 1-2 weeks for the payment to appear in Student Ladok. Please note that you can apply for a residence permit directly and do not have to wait for, nor submit your payment receipt from KTH to The Swedish Migration Agency. They will be notified automatically via Ladok when the payment has been registered.

What happens if I do not pay the tuition fee for the following semester?

A student who does not comply with the payment regulations will be suspended from further studies at KTH. The decision on suspension enters into force immediately and applies until full payment is made.

Students with accommodation through KTH will lose their tenancy contract. The same applies to the other benefits within additional services for tuition paying students (e.g. insurance, primary health care, etc.) until the suspension is reversed.

Can I drop a course that I am registered for?

If you want to drop a course and change to another one, it is possible to do so within three weeks from course start.

Course discontinuation

I want to take an extra course. Is it possible?

Please turn to your master coordinator  for further information on course selection.

I want to take a language course. Will I have to pay additional fees for that course?

A Swedish language and culture course  is offered for all international master's programme students who don't have Swedish as their mother tongue. The course is conducted in the first study year. Participation is free of charge and the participants will not receive any academic credits after completing the course.

In addition, the Unit for Language and Communication offers a distance-learning Swedish course called Learning Swedish  that is free of charge and available for all international students.

International degree-seeking students interested in taking a language course that generates academic credits at KTH need to turn to their master coordinator to find out whether it is possible to include a course in their degree. If possible, the coordinator can help you sign up for the course.

I hold a KTH Scholarship. What are the requirements for getting an extension of the scholarship?

If you have been awarded a KTH Scholarship you need to obtain a minimum of 45 ECTS credits in your first year of studies to receive a continued scholarship for the second year. If you are enrolled in a one-year master's programme, you need a minimum of 10 ECTS credits in the first semester to get a continued scholarship for the second semester. The requirements are clearly stated in the guidelines the students receive when being nominated for the scholarship.

The KTH Scholarship will be withdrawn for the students who do not obtain the required number of credits.

Students holding a scholarship from the Swedish Institute need to turn to the contact person at the relevant school at KTH or the Swedish Institute to find out the requirements.

I want to do my degree project abroad. Can I do that within my master's degree programme?

Students who, within their programme, wish to study abroad through an exchange agreement have to pay tuition fees to KTH for the semester in which the exchange is taking place. For further information on exchange studies, please turn to the international coordinator  for your programme.

If you have a scholarship through the Swedish Institute, you need to contact them to get information on their regulations regarding exchange studies.

Students holding a KTH-India scholarship cannot do an exchange semester according to the scholarship statutes decided by the donator.

What happens if I cannot transfer 30 ECTS to my master's degree and need to take supplementary courses at KTH?

During your exchange studies, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are registered for the equivalent of 30 ECTS credits during the semester and that the foreign credits equivalent to 30 ECTS are correctly transferred to your master's degree.

If you cannot transfer 30 ECTS to your master's degree and need to take supplementary courses at KTH, you will have to pay additional fees (per credit) for these courses. You should contact your master coordinator if extenuating circumstances beyond your control cause the missed credits. If these circumstances are accepted by the Educational Administration Manager (UA) at your school, you may be exempt from paying additional fees.

Am I liable to pay tuition fees if I get an approved leave from studies?

Students who intend to apply for approved leave from studies shall, to not be liable to pay tuition fees, submit an application for approved leave from studies to their student counsellor/master coordinator no later than the deadline for payment of the tuition fee. The same applies to students who intend to not complete their studies.

Approved leave and non-completion of studies

I have an approved leave from studies from my school. Am I still entitled to the additional service for tuition paying students?

During the period in which you are having an approved leave from studies, you are considered a non-active student. For this reason, you are not entitled to the additional services for tuition paying students during this period. This means that the comprehensive insurance FAS+ does not apply. Therefore, ensuring you have sufficient insurance coverage is important until you resume your studies at KTH.

In addition, the accommodation contract will be cancelled.

What if I do not finish my studies on time? Will I have to pay additional fees?

You only have to pay for a course once and have the right to complete the started studies for which tuition fees have been paid.
It is however important that you contact your coordinator or programme director to get information on how to arrange your studies to get your degree.

Please note that the maximum stay with a KTH Accommodation contract is 11 months for students enrolled in a two-year Master's degree programme. Students enrolled in a one-year Master's degree programme are guaranteed accommodation for a certain time. If you plan to stay longer, you are strongly advised to register as soon as possible at Stockholm Student Accommodation .

The same applies to the Swedish State's Insurance for fee-paying students (FAS+) and the primary health care service provided by Avonova. For the extended study period you need to purchase insurance coverage yourself.

In addition to the regulations at KTH, there are regulations regarding study achievements for the extension of the residence permit which you have to keep in mind. For further information on the requirements, please visit the Swedish Migration Agency  website. 

For how long am I able to keep my accommodation through KTH?

Tuition fee-paying students and scholarship holders enrolled in a one-year or two-year master's programme are guaranteed accommodation from August to June during their first year of studies, with the possibility of extending their housing contract for one additional academic year.

If you plan to stay longer or do not finish your studies on time, you are strongly advised to register as soon as possible at Stockholm Student Accommodation .
