CE2385 Selective organic synthesis, theory 7.5 credits

Selective Organic Synthesis (CE2385) is an advanced master level course in organic chemistry tand a continuation of Advanced Organic Chemistry (KD2310). The course aims at widen and deepen the students' knowledge and understanding of modern organic synthesis, including light- and electricity driven synthesis. The course covers fundamental concepts in chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity and apply these in synthetic strategies. In addition, the course covers retrosynthetic analysis that aims at enabling advanced organic synthesis from simple molecular building blocks. The content of CE2385 (7.5 hp) is identical to the theory in KD2390 (9.0 hp). For this reason, these courses are mutually exclusive and only one of them may be included in a diploma degree.

Please note that from the fall semester 2024 the course CE2385 will be replaced with the course CK2385 with the corresponding course content.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

  • Fundamental concepts in chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity
  • Synthetic strategy and principles for selective, in particular stereoselective, chemical transformations
  • Transition metal catalysis
  • Frontier orbital-controlled reactions
  • Retrosynthetic analysis

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Grading scale

A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Examination

  • PRO1 - Project, 1.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TEN1 - Written exam, 6.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

The final grade will be the same as for the written examination.

Add-on studies

The project course KD2905 (7.5 credits) or KD2910 (15 credits) may be used as complementary laboratory course to CE2385. Please contact the course coordinators for CE2385 for more information.

Transitional regulations

Module (PRO1) – Project assignment can be completed on two occasions during the next two years (ie once a year) after the course has been given for the last time.

Module (TEN1) - Written exam is offered four times in the next two years (ie twice per year) after the course is given for the last time.

A new course with the course code CK2385 is being established, which will have the following moment division from Autmn 2024

PRO1 – Projekt/Project, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

TEN1 – Written exam/Written exam, 5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, Fx, F
