Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Oral presentations. Discussions and listening comprehension . Exercises in varied language. Reading and essay writing. Overview and exercises on the relation between different stylistic levels, language for special purposes and standard language.

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course are on level C1 according to GERS, the joint European framework for language.

On completion of the course - in addition to what is evident from courses on lower level - the students should be able to:

Listening comprehension

· follow longer lectures, debates and discussions and complicated subjects also outside their field of interest (C1)

· recognise idiomatic expressions and differences in style (C1)

· Understand a more elaborated language also when it is not clear and the context is only implied (C1)

Reading comprehension

· Understand and be able to present the contents of authentic texts within different fields such as society, scholarship and technology also outside their own speciality (C1)

· be familiar with differences between different genres (C1)

· also understand subtle details and implied opinions (C1)

Speech

· describe subjects linked to studies within technology and science as well as working life as subjects of peripheral character in a clear and detailed way (C1)

Talk and oral interaction

· speak fluent and spontaneous without too obvious search for words and expressions (C1)

· use the language flexibly and efficient for social, interest - and work-related purposes (C1)

· formulate ideas and opinions with precision and skilfully adapt to the interlocutor (C1)

Writing

· write clear and well-structured texts about complicated subjects linked to e g studies within technical subjects, society and science (C1)

· emphasize arguments, develop and reason in genres relevant to the student (C1)

· formulate themselves in writing in complex and specific situations (C1)

· adapt style and level to the intended receivers (C1)

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Three years of academic studies. Completed and passed Swedish B2, equivalent older course or the equivalent knowledge showed through a compulsory placement test made before applying to the course.

  • KONA - Assessment, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TENB - Written Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • TENA - Oral Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
