Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
The course is based on individual readings of selected texts of the different strands in pkanning theory, as a base for discussions and excercises at the seminars. The students are expected to throughout the corse write notes on how their own subject and research relates to the readings. The examination consist of participation in the seminars, and an elaborated text, positioning the research in the tradition of planning theory and research. The text should be written as a part of the theoretical section in a dissertation, and the subject will decide theoretical concepts and authors used in each individual final examination.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
-describe historical and contemporary development in the field of planning theory
- identify, explain and use central concepts from planning theory
- discuss the relation between theory and methodology
- discuss and evaluate the use and value of theory in relation to planning practice
- critically analyse theoretical texts and place them in a wider context of theoretical traditions
-position and relate own research to relevant strands of the wider historical context of planning theory and planning research

Examination and completion
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

- PRO1 - Project work, 7.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
If dissertation language is swedish, the final written examination can be done in swedish, but the oral presentation and discussion should be in english

Written text with theoretical positioning, to be presented and discussed at the final seminar
Opportunity to complete the requirements via supplementary examination
Opportunity to raise an approved grade via renewed examination
