The main focus of the course is how the interplay between on the one hand the characteristics and changes of the energy system and on the other hand energy actors create business opportunities, how these can be identified and developed to new business.

Course contents
Intended learning outcomes
After successful completion of this course the participant shall have:
- Theoretical and empirical knowledge about the basic characteristics and ongoing changes of the energy system, in space (internationally, nationally, locally) as well as in time (moment, day, year, epochs).
- Theoretical and empirical knowledge about different forms of business based on different parts on the energy value chain, both core and support processes, including energy services, energy carriers, customer categories, geographical markets, financial instruments and so on.
- Theoretical and empirical knowledge about how energy business is organized in companies, cooperatives, public authorities and other organisations, the character and changes of companies etc, the role of private and public actors, the range from small local cooperatives to giant international companies.
- Theoretical knowledge about how business models are developed and implemented and practical experience from developing a business plan for an established or a new energy business.
Literature and preparations
Specific prerequisites
a) 180 hp
b) 12 hp in industrial economics and management
c) 12 hp in an energy field (e g energy technology, energy processes, electrical power systems).
Recommended prerequisites
At least 180 hp and 12 hp in industrial economics and management and 12 hp in any energy field. For exceptions, please contact the course responsible.
You should not read both ME2307 and ME2077 because they are overlapping.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

- PRO1 - Project, 1.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
- TEN1 - Examination, 5.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
Other requirements for final grade
Written examination. A smaller and a bigger course project. Active participation in lectures and seminars. Presentation of two course projects and participation in study visits is obligatory.
