“Deep-sea science and technology and human perception of ‘the environment’”

Lunch seminar with Tirza Meyer, postdoctoral researcher at KTH

Tirza Meyer

Tirza Meyer will talk about her ongoing book project “Humanoid Oceans”. The main goal of the project is to understand how human ability to study large ecosystems on a planetary scale has changed our perception of ‘environment’ at large. The deep-sea is a fantastic case as it is a place far removed from humans that can only be studied through very complicated, expensive and often remote technology. Studying the history of deep-sea science and technology is a way to grasp how humans explore remote places, what kind of ideas about the environment develop during those explorations and how those ideas change as we learn more about the remote ecosystems of the deep ocean.
