NEXUS addresses the urgent need for climate action by phasing fossil fuels out of the economy and developing nuclear energy into a cornerstone of the energy system. It will deliver safe, circular, efficient and reliable nuclear technologies, drastically extending the life of the existing light-water fleet while pioneering breakthroughs in next-generation reactors, Generation IV and fusion, that supply both electricity and high-temperature process heat, above 1000°C, which hard-to-abate industries need. By harnessing up to 99% of the uranium energy content, against under 1% today, and closing the fuel cycle, NEXUS aims to remove the need for new uranium mining, drastically reduce wasteand sharply lower costs. Additionally, with fusion breakthrough in the long term, nuclear technology can reach even further globally, bringing fossil-free energy into the parts of the economy that have been hardest to decarbonize: steel, chemicals, hydrogen and transport.
The paradigm shift that makes new nuclear easy to deploy will come from integration, not from any single field working alone. NEXUS therefore brings the science that delivers nuclear technology that industry can adopt, suppliers can build, regulators can license and the public supports, at a cost and on a timeline the national ambitions can sustain. Artificial intelligence runs through the design, qualification, operation and monitoring that tie these fields together, accelerating progress across the operating fleet, Generation IV, and fusion, so capacity built for one prepares the next.

The NEXUS Academy reinforces this by training a new generation of experts who work across the boundaries that have kept these fields apart, enabling scientific, technological and societal breakthroughs by bridging today’s silos.
What makes NEXUS more than a research programme is how results leave the laboratory. Every advancement is proven on real industrial sites through co-funded demonstrations in which each output is not just another paper but a component a supplier can make and qualify, a design a regulator can license and a company an investor can back.
NEXUS Innovation
Across a ten-year arc, public funding gives way to private capital as the cluster seeds the start-ups and supplier capacity that let each breakthrough scale into Sweden's nuclear value chain. The opportunity is rare, and for Sweden to take. The country has decided to rebuild its nuclear capacity, roughly doubling electricity supply by 2045 with new reactors at the centre. Research that shapes how reactors are built, licensed and run, arrives exactly as those decisions are being made. Few places hold what deployment requires: an operating fleet and deep nuclear expertise to learn from, an industrial base already pushing to defossilise steel and hydrogen, a capable regulator, and a public that has chosen to build. No leading international environment has united a full research base across the operating fleet, Generation IV and fusion to a committed domestic market and a society ready to act. NEXUS is built to take that open position and to place Sweden among the world's five leading environments for nuclear-enabled industrial transition, turning a national build into a global advantage and providing nuclear-based solutions to climate change.
