In rapidly growing cities informality has a crucial role in the delivery of urban services. An increasing number of small-scale private entrepreneurs in cities worldwide have been able to literally ‘keep the water flowing’ where there is a lack of a formal water supply system. Informal services typically emerge in those parts of the city where people are unconnected from the main network. While different informal modes of service delivery demonstrate different levels of success, they continue to have an important role in the city.
This Brown Bag Lunch (BBL) is an invitation to discuss informality in relation to water but also other types of urban services. How are urban services being re-thought? Is informality always a ‘good’ thing? How do different city actors engage with informality?
The format of the BBL:
- Introduction of the topic by Timos Karpouzoglou
- Introduction by participants and short question for reflection: "How are you working or would like to work with cities and informality?"
