New high-performance machinery has been installed at KTH’s Production Engineering department. The DMG MORI–developed 5-axis machining centre will boost precision-engineering research and strengthen long-term innovation in powertrain component development. It is the first of two machining centres provided through a collaboration between DMG MORI and KTH.

Centre X is excited to announce the installation of a new 5-axis machining centre at the IPU department at KTH: the NMV5000DCG from DMG MORI. The machine is now fully operational and will enable new research capabilities at Centre X and KTH, providing a platform for studies in precision engineering, advanced gear production and digitalisation. This addition strengthens the long-term commitment of Centre X to advancing research in powertrain components.

The NMV5000DCG from DMG MORI is a 5-axis machining centre designed for high precision and accuracy. With its DCG technology (Driven at the Center of Gravity), the machine delivers exceptional rigidity and low vibrations, allowing it to attain tight tolerances. The machine is also capable of power skiving and gear grinding. Power skiving is quickly becoming the preferred method of machining for example internal gear in industry over traditional methods such as broaching and gear shaping. Gear grinding is also possible, the machine tool can switch to a special gear grinding unit which uses electroplated grinding wheels and an optical system to measure the exact position of the gear teeth.

The machine is part of a long term collaboration between DMG MORI and CX and KTH. More information is coming, stay tuned ...
