Future Prospects of Emerging Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation

Since its emergence in debates about climate mitigation in the early 2000's, Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) has evolved to occupy a central position in proposed pathways to carbon neutral societies. Join us for this talk to find out more about the context of its emergence and future prospects with a view to policy frameworks and funding instruments.

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) has evolved from a peripheral concept in climate science into a central element of climate change mitigation strategies aimed at achieving net-zero and net-negative emissions.

This presentation adopts a global starting point, outlining the emergence of CDR in scientific assessments and policy debates, before zooming in on developments in Sweden, other Nordic countries, and at the EU level. Key policy frameworks and funding instruments are discussed with respect to their role in enabling the effective deployment of CDR within climate change mitigation policies.

The talk presents selected examples from Kenneth Möllersten’s ongoing research at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, including techno-economic and systems analyses of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) and DACCS (Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage), as well as broader frameworks for responsibly incentivising CDR in greenhouse gas mitigation pathways. The presentation concludes with reflections on future research needs and policy challenges.

Kenneth Möllersten , Adjunct Professor at the Division of Process Technology, at the KTH Department of Chemical Engineering, has over 25 years' experience of working in the interface between greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation technology and climate policy. His current research is focused on Carbon Dioxide Removal, the net-zero transformation, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, Voluntary Carbon Markets, and methods for GHG accounting and reporting.
