How to model the gradient of a bicycle path has a significant impact on bicycle traffic; hence, this impact should be captured in microscopic traffic simulation.

In this paper, we investigate how to include the gradient impact in bicycle traffic simulation using Vissim. The results show that the car-based modelling approach in Vissim underestimates the effect of gradient on the speed of cyclists. Therefore, we emphasize the need for developing behavioral models designed for cyclists.
