Exploring free riding behavior

An instrumented bicycle study on the impact of infrastructure and wind on bicycling.

Published Sep 02, 2025

Danil Belikhov, Guillermo Pérez Castro, Mathis Titgemeyer, Fredrik Johansson, Heather Kaths, and Johan Olstam used instrumented bicycles in Germany and Sweden to study how cyclists behave when riding freely.

In the study they could how infrastructure and wind affect speed, and reveal diverse downhill tactics, from coasting to pushing for the next climb. This work is a step toward developing cycling models for traffic simulation that capture the complexity of human cycling behavior.
