Legal requirements and environmental management system

KTH programmes

Under the Higher Education Act, higher education institutions shall promote sustainable development in their activities to assure a sound and healthy environment, economic and social welfare, and justice for present and future generations. The Higher Education Ordinance defines the knowledge and skills in sustainable development that are required to award degrees in different education programmes.

The Swedish Council for Higher Education provides translated versions of The Swedish Higher Education Act (uhr.se)  and The Higher Education Ordinance (uhr.se) .

KTH’s environmental management system

As a state authority, KTH has a responsibility to contribute to achieving the national environmental quality objectives and the UN’s global sustainable development goals (SDGs). The environmental management system shall constitute a part of an overall management system that describes how planning, implementation, follow up and improvement of the university’s activities are to be performed. KTH submits a yearly report on its work to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Binding requirements – legal and other requirements

KTH is subject to laws, regulations, ordinances and other requirements in relation to the environment. These are referred to as Binding requirements – legal and other requirements. In order to be environmentally certified, these requirements must be identified and compliance ensured, and measures must be taken to monitor and follow up on any changes in applicable requirements. A list of the Binding requirements - legal and other requirements, which KTH’s school are subject to, is maintained by the KTH Sustainability Office.
