Enhancing movement

We design and develop different types of passive and active assistive devices for people with mobility impairments.

Collage of photo and illustrations showing movement research and assistive devices

Particular challenges we address:

  • Designing external devices that support movement without restricting the user’s abilities
  • Using simulations to determine ideal assistance
  • Using sensors and controllers that detect and respond to the user’s intended movements
  • Assisting the user as needed and encouraging active participation
  • Efficiently using smart components and materials
  • Using a human-in-the-loop approach wherein a unique solution to assist walking is found for each individual and goal
