About the marine research theme

We live on a blue planet. The oceans are home to fascinating marine life and play important roles in regulating both climate and weather. The oceans are a critical source of food for billions of people, they are an environment for harvesting energy and long distance transport, while also supporting coastal livelihoods and shaping our cultures.

At the same time, everywhere the oceans and seas are under threat from pollution, over-fishing, coral bleaching, climate change, ocean acidification and more, disproportionately affecting those with less. To restore and protect our oceans, we need to better understand them.

The UN has proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, starting in 2021, to support efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and support ocean science. It is in this context that at KTH we work on a range of projects to build a more sustainable and just relationship with our oceans.
