Climate research projects receive funding for feasibility studies

Four research groups at KTH have each been awarded SEK 250,000 to carry out feasibility studies for climate-related projects. The funding comes from Engineers of Sweden’s Environmental Fund, which in 2025 will distribute SEK 5 million in grants to support research and degree projects aimed at improving the physical environment.
This year, the Environmental Fund’s rotating research grants go in part to KTH. Each grant, worth SEK 250,000, was awarded at the KTH Climate Action Centre to four projects focusing on climate adaptation and mitigation or environmental policy measures.
The four research projects at KTH receiving funding
Climate adaptation during crises
Rebecka Ericsdotter Engström and Joseph Mulligan explore how cities can continue climate efforts during crises such as conflicts or climate disasters, using methods for decision-making under uncertainty.
Green spaces and biodiversity
Katarina Larsen, Sara Borgström and Anja Moum Rieser study how citizen dialogue can contribute to better climate adaptation in cities and how to avoid building barriers for animals and plants, instead fostering biodiversity in new ways.
Taxation as a climate measure
Markus Larsson, Jens Ergon and Göran Finnveden analyse how different taxes affect income groups and whether they can be used as instruments to reduce emissions.
AI and visualisation of climate change
Ingrid Campo Ruiz and Emma Riese are developing an interactive tool that shows the connections between climate change and poverty, providing new insights for research, education and policy.
About the funding
The majority of the Environmental Fund’s distribution – SEK 3 million – goes to students. This year, 60 grants of SEK 50,000 each will be awarded to engineering students who want to write degree projects on technical solutions to environmental challenges in Sweden. The funding comes from Swedbank Humanfond, where savers themselves choose the cause to support.
