Copilot Chat for KTH students, support for your studies

A tool that can support several parts of your studies

AI tools are already part of many students’ everyday lives. By offering Copilot Chat through KTH, we want to create clearer and more secure conditions for how AI can be used in studies, and provide students with a tool that is adapted to a university environment.

Torbjörn Hellman is a portfolio manager at the IT department and has worked with the introduction of Copilot Chat at KTH. He describes the service as a tool that can be used in several parts of the study process.

– We see Copilot Chat as a study support tool, similar to other digital tools that are already part of everyday student life. It is about facilitating work related to structure, language, and reflection.

For many students, Copilot Chat can function as a way to reason towards better understanding, much like explaining your thinking out loud or testing questions against yourself. The tool can help lower thresholds in study work and free up mental energy for tasks that require your own thinking.

Four examples of how Copilot Chat can support your studies

1. Getting started on an assignment or project

Many students recognise the feeling of sitting with an assignment without really knowing where to begin. Copilot Chat can help you to:

• break down an assignment into smaller parts

• create a rough work plan or timeline

• formulate questions to explore further

This can be particularly useful at the beginning of a project, when the structure is not yet clear.

2. Getting an overview of course material

When course material feels extensive, Copilot Chat can help you to:

• summarise longer texts or lecture notes

This can be a way to check your own understanding and gain an overview, for example before a lecture, seminar discussion, or revision.

For students studying in a second language, Copilot Chat can also be used to test formulations or get support in understanding language and terminology used in course material.

Ahead of an on-campus exam or other forms of examination, Copilot Chat can be used to:

• help you formulate your own summaries for revision

This can be a way to practise and reflect on course content and test your understanding ahead of an examination.

Use in relation to course requirements

How AI tools may be used can vary between courses and examination formats. It is therefore important to find out what applies in your specific course.

– It is always the course design and the examination that determine how different tools may be used. Students therefore need to base their use on the instructions given in each course.

As with other digital tools, it is important to apply critical judgement and evaluate responses carefully, particularly as AI tools may sometimes produce simplified or incomplete answers.

Copilot Chat offered through KTH differs from open consumer services in that it is used with sign-in and enhanced data protection.

– By offering Copilot Chat through KTH, we can give students access to an AI support tool that is better suited to a university environment, both in terms of security and responsibility.
