Crosscuts is an environmental humanities festival for documentary film, art and debate created by the KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory. We bring together storytelling, filmmaking, and research and offer the audience a journey around the world. Through film, poetry and conversations between leading researchers, filmmakers and activists, we approach current topics such as climate change, global resource extraction, gentrification and activism.
The Festival
With this festival, we want to show that research does not always take the form of written text, but can also be a visual experience. In this way, we want to reach out with the research conducted at KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory and at the same time build bridges to the other research projects at the Division of History and to other projects elsewhere.
Welcome to attend the fifth edition of Stockholm’s environmental humanities festival for film and text, Crosscuts, on 14th, 21st and 22nd October 2026
For the 2026 edition of Crosscuts the theme is colonialism. We will explore how colonial systems, both historic and contemporary, have shaped and been shaped by relations between the human and more-than-human.
Our centerpiece film for this year will be the Swedish premier of Overburden, a feature length documentary that explores the past and present of the East Nimba Nature Reserve in Liberia. Home to some of West Africa’s most endangered species, the reserve is built on the grounds of an iron ore mine originally developed by the Liberian American Swedish Mining Company (LAMCO). Although that mine closed in 1990, the reserve faces new efforts to exploit the region’s rich iron ore deposits.
We have one night at the Stocholm University of Arts (SKH) and two nights of film and discussion scheduled at Filmhuset, Stockholm.
Crosscuts comes across as a cutting-edge bridge between academia, the art world, and the public sphere. This is eminently in line with KTH’s best traditions; the school’s motto famously brings together science and art.
