Four subjects ranked in the world’s top 50

Four subjects at KTH Royal Institute of Technology are ranked among the top 50 worldwide in the latest ratings by QS.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014, which were released today, KTH has eight subjects ranked in the top 100, four of which are in the top 50.

Mechanical Engineering at KTH was ranked 22nd. In Electrical Engineering, KTH was ranked 31st. Civil and Structural engineering at KTH was ranked 46th. And for the first time, Material Science at KTH entered the top 50 in the QS rankings, being placed at 48th.  

“This confirms that KTH has a very strong position internationally in the subjects of engineering science,” says Peter Gudmundson, President of KTH. “It’s also exciting that we advanced in several respects.”

KTH also has progressed in Computer Science & Info Systems, Chemical Engineering, Statistics & Operational Research and Environmental Sciences, all of which made the top 100.

Per-Anders Östling, KTH rankings expert, concludes:

“KTH has four subjects among the top 50, and four subjects in the range of 51 to 100. In addition, four subjects improved their placement. That is a very strong result and it reflects a continuing positive trend.”

In the 2014 QS World University Rankings by Subject, 3,002 universities and 10,639 programs have been evaluated and analysed. The rankings are based on various weighted indicators. Academic reputation, for example, comprises 40 percent of the final grade, and the number of citations represents 25 percent.

“At the general level, KTH continues to get better values ​​in the indicators that measure research and educational reputation, as well as in measuring impact and excellence in research,” Östling says. “This suggests that both KTH's reputation and research are further strengthened.”
