Advanced Machining Systems

Illustration of machine

Exploring how machine tools, sensors, and control systems work together as one – turning process data into real-time insight for smarter, more productive manufacturing.

Project description

This project investigates machining as an integrated system, where machine tools, sensors, ERP-systems and the control system work together to gain deeper insight into the machining process, ultimately leading to increased productivity and efficiency. The work focuses on building knowledge in system behaviour, process dynamics, and the interaction between mechanical structure, tool–workpiece engagement, and control under varying operating conditions. Particular emphasis is placed on how data from multiple sources is utilised to support monitoring, analysis, and informed decision-making in advanced machining environments. Key to the digital transformation is a functional data structure, where data is context-aware, traceable, and enriched with metadata. This enables data-driven analysis and real-time optimisation.

Outcome

By moving from component-level to system-level understanding of machining, this project supports the development of more integrated and digitalised manufacturing solutions.
