The common ground of knowledge and beliefs which is the basis for successful communication between people is what "allmän bildning" means. The engineer's professional proficiency should include common knowledge in many areas and this course deals with some of them.

Course contents *

General knowledge in speaking and writing. Studies of talks, debate and essays. Discussion about the effects of using markers of erudition.

Factual elements considered to be general knowledge in the areas literature, art, music, history, philosophy, religion, politics and science.

Writing exercises for publication or oral presentation according to choice.

Intended learning outcomes *

After the course, the student should be able to

  • recognise cultural fragments that are frequent in educated writing,
  • show general knowledge about cultural and nontechnical subjects,
  • use elements of cultural knowledge in speech and writing

in order to

  • be able to take part in dialogue and debate with nontechnicians,
  • employ new ways of thinking in professional life.
