Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The beginning and current history development of online games.
The functions of online gaming.
Aspects of online games:
• Marketable business, design, production and distribution of online games
• Guilds, groups, and communities of online games
• Identity and social interaction of online games
• Legal aspects of online games
• Narratives and design of online games
• Economy and money of online games
• Market, produciton and distribution of online games

Intended learning outcomes

The goal of this course is to give an introduction and a general understanding of online games from a social, technological and economic perspective.

Upon completion the student should be able to

comprehend the online gaming functions and from where it derives: i.e.,
explain the characteristics of online gaming and how it differs from other computer games; understand the development process of online gaming from the beginning stages to current.

Present your ideas, evaluate and form your own opinions regarding the strength and weaknesses of online games from a technical, social and economical viewpoint.

Analyze the relationship between culture and technology of online games.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
