Intended learning outcomes

A On completion of the course the students should be able to:

  • Understand Project management from a theoretical, methodological and practical perspective, including Methodologies and Mechanics
  • Understand the new demands, specific needs and practical problems when introducing ICT in the areas of health, government and education (e-health, e-learning and e-government)
  • Understand and operationalize a holistic and customer oriented approach to project management
  • Understand the peculiarities of academic projects in computing and information sciences and be able to work with different types of them.
  • Understand and discuss the differences and similarities between project management in developed and developing countries

Course Disposition

The course is a 10 week course composed of:
Lectures, seminars, projectwork/fieldwork, tutorials, case studies and discussions.

Specific prerequisites

Admission requirements for the Master Program ”Engineering and Management of Information Systems” (EMIS):
Bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher education in science, engineering or other discipline related to the major subject: Information Technology. The academic qualification must be equivalent to 180 ECTS credits. English proficiency equivalent to TOEFL 550 (213 for the computer-based test) or IELTS 5.5. Previous studies must have included a minimum of 60 Swedish credits (90 ECTS credits, 1,5 years in-depth studies) of university courses in any combination from the following subjects: Computer Programming, Data Bases or File Structures, Network architecture, Computer System Modelling, Operative Systems, Algorithms, Data Communication or/and Software Engineering.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

Since the course is composed of three different parts, it is also examinated in three different ways:
1 A theoretical and academic discussion on Project Management and its mechanics. This part is evaluated through a written examination (3p/4,5hp). This part measures the level of understanding and concrete knowledge on the subject.
2 A practical project work, where the students working in groups should be able to propose and implement a 4 weeks project. This part is worth 4p/6hp. A final project report and the final presentation in a semimar are the basis for evaluation. This part measures the ability of the students to apply the theoretical knowledge in a concrete project.
3 Finally, this course gives special attention to the areas of e-learning, e-government and e-health. Thus, everyone of this subjects is allocated one week, where theories, case studies and seminars alternate. Everyone of the subjects is worth 1p/1,5hp. This works will be evaluated and graded by the end of each week. They represent an evaluation of the capacity to work in groups and the level of understanding of the specific subject.
In Summary:
Final written examination: 3p/4,5hp
Practical project work: 4p/6hp
Special subjects: 3p/4,5hp (1p/1,5 point per each subject)
