KH1402 Ecological Chemistry 6.0 credits

The course in ecological chemistry is dedicated to students intrerested in organic chemistry, natural product chemistry and analytical chemistry and applications in sustaniable development in agriculture and forestry. After the course the student will be able to utilize the most common analytical and behavioural techniques in chemical ecology, and understand basic principles in separation and identification of bioactive molecules.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

This course hasan organicchemicalapproach andlists the mainsteps forthe isolation and identificationof natural productsandmethods to studybiological function.

The coursecontainboth organicspectroscopy(UV, IR,NMR andmass spectroscopy) andlaboratory worksuch as distillation, gas chromatography, thin layer chromatographyandliquid chromatography. The theory will be explained before anypractical part will be done.Studentsare expected to presenthandouts. The course ends witha "Report day"when studentsreportselectedlaboratory work in the presence ofteachers.

Intended learning outcomes

Students who complete the course can handle:

common operation in an organic chemistry laboratory and also understand the principles behind them.
They can also analyse organic comppunds and interpret the resulting spectra.
