Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Exercises to comprehend Japanese and converse in simple everyday situations. Pronunciation exercises. Grammar and vocabulary exercises. Learning of about 70 kanji characters. Learning of the katakana. Translation exercise of simple everyday texts from Japanese to Swedish and the reverse. Written exercises, for example letters and simple journal entries. Facts about Japan, Japanese culture, society and technical development.

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course lie mainly at the level A1, with certain elements at the level A2, according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

On completion of the course, the student, in addition to what is evident from courses at the lower level, should be able to:

  • use the language orally and in writing in simple everyday situations (A1)
  • understand and account (in Swedish) for information from different elementary texts
  • describe everyday situations/subjects in simple language on the target language (A1/A2)
  • use the kanji dictionary to be able to search unknown Chinese signs
  • translate simple sentences from Japanese to Swedish and the reverse.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
