Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

During the course, the reading of simple texts, essay-writing, listening comprehension and simple dialogues are practised from everyday words and phrases. Basic rules of grammar and pronunciation of Swedish are presented and practised. Components of everyday living in Sweden, Swedish culture, society and technical development are presented.

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course mainly refer to the levels A1/A2 according to CEFR, Common European Framework of Reference for Language.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

Listening comprehension

• understand simple phrases and conversations about everyday situations/subjects in slow and clear speech (A1).

Reading comprehension

• understand information from a variety of everyday texts (A1-A2)

• identify facts from authentic texts that contain simple everyday content (A1-A2)

Speech

• talk about yourself, your family, your house and your studies with simple phrases and sentences (A1-A2)

• describe everyday situations/subjects with simple language (A1-A2)

Conversation and oral production

• participate in simple, everyday conversations that are slow and clear (A1)

• ask and answer simple questions related to everyday topics (A1)

Writing

• use language in everyday situations such as short, personal letters and texts (A1-A2)

Other

• account for elementary Swedish realia

University entry requirements. Applicants are not required to have prior knowledge of Swedish.

  • TENB - Written Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TENA - Oral Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
