In 1748, she became the first woman to be elected to the Swedish Academy of Sciences. The choice was based on the new ideas of the Enlightenment, where women could publicly appear as intellectual, educated and creative individuals.

The same year she was elected, she described how to use the newly introduced vegetable potato as a raw material for the production of bread and starch, but also for powders and spirits. The latter is still what she is best known for. Eva Ekblad is sometimes described as Sweden's first female chemist.
