Eligibility, priorities and conditions
Find out whether you can apply for KTH housing, how accommodation is prioritised and what conditions apply.
How does KTH prioritise housing applications?
KTH Housing allocates accommodation according to the following priority order. You must meet the eligibility requirements and complete your application by the deadline for your student category.
| Priority | Student category | Housing offer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - First priority | Tuition-fee-paying students taking a full bachelor’s or master’s programme at KTH | Accommodation is guaranteed for the first academic year, subject to the housing conditions and application requirements. |
| 2 - Second priority | Students in eligible joint master’s programmes | Accommodation depends on availability after first-priority students have been accommodated. Housing is not guaranteed. |
| 3 - Third priority | Students coming to KTH for one or two semesters of exchange studies (including double degree or dual master's) | Accommodation depends on availability after first- and second-priority students have been accommodated. Housing is not guaranteed. |
Other student groups
Most students who do not pay tuition fees cannot apply for KTH Housing. Exceptions apply to eligible joint master’s programmes and incoming exchange, double degree and dual master’s students.
If you are not covered by an eligible category, read our guide to finding housing on your own . Start your search as soon as you are admitted.
What conditions apply to KTH housing?
The following conditions apply to students offered accommodation through KTH Housing, including joint master’s and exchange students.
Can I choose my accommodation?
KTH have a limited number of rooms and the capacity varies from one year to another. You can state your accommodation preferences, but your preferred location or accommodation type cannot be guaranteed.
Applying earlier within the application period does not improve your chances of receiving a preferred option.
What if I have specific housing needs due to pre-existing medical conditions?
If you have any pre-existing medical condition that affects your housing needs, please mention this when filling in the application for housing. KTH Housing will try to find suitable accommodation, depending on availability.
Can I bring a pet or assistance dog?
Pets are not allowed. If you need an assistance dog for medical reasons, email housingoffice@kth.se when you apply.
Can I bring my partner or children?
State in your application if you plan to bring a partner or children, and we will try to find suitable accommodation in one of our locations. If you are only coming with a spouse, we can likely assist with housing through KTH but the offer you receive may not reflect your selected preference in location and type of housing.
The number of apartments suitable for families is limited and cannot be guaranteed. Any housing guarantee covers the admitted student only.
Check who is included in your housing offer and contract before making arrangements for accompanying family members.
How long can I stay?
KTH Housing offers accommodation for one or two semesters. Your contract states your rental period.
If you are planning to stay longer, you will need to organise further accommodation on your own . We strongly recommend signing up for the Stockholm Student Housing Foundation (SSSB) housing queue as soon as possible. The longer time spent in the queue, the higher the chance of finding housing after your KTH Housing contract expires.
Read " Accommodation contract " for information about requesting changes or an extension.
When must I pay rent?
Rent is paid monthly in advance. Pay each invoice by its stated deadline to keep your housing contract. The first rent is due shortly after you receive and accept your accommodation offer.
Read " How to pay rent " for payment instructions and any accommodation-specific deposit requirements.
Can I sublet my accommodation?
Subletting KTH Housing accommodation is prohibited and can result in your contract being terminated.
