The course has an interdisciplinary nature to provide a general picture of conditions in the region. In order to better understand today's society the course gives an overview of the historical development and economic, social and political conditions technical development and future needs as well as Swedish opportunities to participate and contribute to development in for example Iraq.

Intended learning outcomes
The likelihood that you will continue to work internationally is great and this means that you as an engineer will work in an environment very different from the Swedish. To succeed you must master the technical aspects in addition to the cultural dimensions at work in an international environment. A good basis for a future job abroad, you get by joining the following course.

The course aims to inspire and to give a broad introduction to the Middle East in view of a future Swedish participation in the reconstruction processes.
After the course the participants will be able to:
Describe how historical, political, economic and social structures enhance or prevents a positive development both nationally and regionally in the MENA region.
Describe globalization's role in the development process and the importance of Swedish companies and future opportunities in the region.
Describe, discuss problems and discuss what drives development, threats and opportunities.
Identify and apply the knowledge which is useful for international work in Sweden and the MENA region.
Plan, implement and present an independent project (thesis and oral presentation).

The literature will be posted on the course website before the course starts. The material consists of information and articles from Sida, EU, UN, World Bank and other organizations as well as material distributed in connection with the lectures.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade
Required for the passing grade is: At least 75% attendance (NÄR1; 1 credit), assignment (INL1; 2hp), the project work completed (PRO1; 3 credits) and presented at a seminar (SEM1; 1.5 credits).
