AF1715 Architecture, the Sketch Process 7.5 credits

This course starts with the sketching process and continues through the preparation of draft documents, paying particular attention to the interaction between various disciplines in the design process.

Examples of course elements:

• Architectural elements

Examples of terms that are covered: Purpose and location. Space and volume. Detail and entirety. Scale and adaptation.

• Architectural creation

From requirements to ideas and suggestions: Which processes are involved? From a concept to the details of technical implementation. How do they work? How does one ensure the final result during the process?

• Sketching assignment, rough sketch and drawing exercises

Short sketch and practice assignments followed by a review. A long design assignment with supervision, and a final class review. Rough sketching and form exercises.

• The history of architecture

The experience of architecture Literature and lectures. An overview of architectural history. Main architectural trends with a focus on contemporary architecture.

• Study trip

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

The project (PRO2, 2.5 credits) consists of a written report (graded A–F) and an oral presentation at the seminar (graded A–F).

The project (PRO3, 4.0 credits) is a construction project focusing on the integration between form and construction technology.

The course ends with a study trip which entails a fee (PRO4, 1.0 credits). The fee amount is determined each year. A free alternative to the study trip will be offered.

To receive a final grade for this course, you must achieve a minimum grade E on PRO2 and PRO3, and a Pass on PRO4 in addition to attending the course's compulsory elements.

Final grades are awarded on a scale of A–F.

• All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
• In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
• In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.

Selection for courses with limited space: if the number of applications that meet entry requirements exceeds the availability for the course, selection will be based on the applicants' credits in the TIBYH programme.
