The course is divided into two parts. The first part consists of lectures which create the common foundation for continuing studies. The lectures discuss the actual areas within biotechnology. The other part includes a project work where the students may choose an area of interest. The results of the study will be presented in written form and orally. This will be followed by a discussion lead by the other students.

Intended learning outcomes
Biotechnology is a broad concept which includes work with many different applications and with different scientific foundations. The course is aimed for students with shifting backgrounds within bioscience (biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, etc) but on a level which corresponds to a degree of Bachelor. The course’s main goal is to provide the students with a broad picture of biotechnology with examples of application with foundations in different scientific fields. The students can extend their knowledge within an individually chosen area. The course aims to practice presentation techniques and critical review of scientific texts. An external exercise in searching through scientific publications is also included in this course. The students will receive knowledge that will serve as a foundation to continue their studies within the Biotechnology Master programme.
After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe on which scientific basis different parts of biotechnology rests.
- Give examples of different biotechnological applications and uses and their scientific foundations
- Carry out a comprehensive literature search for a scientific issues/inquiries.
- From a scientific issue/inquiry, extract information from the literature and summarize it in a scientific report.
- Formulate a constructive critique for a scientific report.
- Orally present results from a study within a scientific area.
