CM205V Medical Technology Management and Operation in Hospital Organizations 5.0 credits

This course introduces the student to how the work with Medical Technology is organized in a big hospital (Karolinska University Hospital) , how the Med Tech Management work together with the hospital staff, surgeons, other Med Tech companies in procuring, administrating and when staff, surgeons need to develop new Med Tech devices.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course includes the following topics:

  • The organization of a large hospital with regard to the management and development of medical equipment.
  • Management of surgical equipment (operating tables, integration solutions, operating microscopes, etc.)
  • Management of Angio-room (MRI equipment, ultrasound, navigation equipment, etc.)
  • Management of monitoring systems (anesthesia workstations, ventilators, etc)
  • Management of hospital-wide equipment

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the management life cycle of a medical device (from procurement to end of life)
  • Describe how a large hospital can be organized with regard to management of medical equipment
  • Identify collaboration challenges between administrations, operating departments, operations and suppliers of medical equipment in a major hospital
  • Identify which actors in the hospital who would be involved in a procurement of a major medical technology equipment and describe different roles and responsibilities

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

120 credits in technical, natural or medical sciences or in human resource studies. Alternatively, 2 years of professional experience in health/medical care.
