Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course consists of lectures and discussion seminars (the latter in small groups).

Practical parts:

  • scientific writing with formulation of research questions, literature search, discussion, references, layout, etc.
  • rhetoric
  • argumentation analysis
  • individual supervision of written texts
  • oral presentation individually and in group
  • media analysis.

Theoretical content

  • theory of science – academic writing
  • communication and conversation
  • narrativity – the forms and expressions of narrative techniques
  • semiotics.

Intended learning outcomes

The goal of the course is to give the students

  • practical knowledge is scientific writing
  • training in oral presentation
  • insights in analysis and construction of messages and argumentation
  • introduction to Media and Communication Studies
  • ability to critically analyze messages, and in particular scientific communication

so that they will

  • be well prepared for academic study and writing
  • be well prepared for communicative situations in their future professional career.

Examination

  • TEN1 - Examination, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • UPP1 - Essay, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

Written exam (TEN1; 1,5 university credits).
Writing shorter academic paper and participation in lectures and seminars (at least 80%) (UPP1; 4,5 university credits).
