Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Distance teaching comprises 75% of the course and consists of:

  • work modules, including terminology, glossaries and various exercises related to particular texts
  • resources for individual practice
  • professional business correspondence with examples of summaries and comments, short reports, product descriptions, letters, faxes and e-mail.

Course meetings, which take place in the evenings, comprise approximately 25% of the course and cover:

  • presentations on technical themes
  • practice in presentation and rhetorical skills
  • practice in commenting and analysing
  • practice in participating and leading discussions
  • an oral presentation of about 10 minutes.

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

Listening comprehension

  • understand the content of clear standard speech on general subject areas/events. (level B2)

Reading comprehension

  • understand and give an account of authentic texts dealing with topical issues on technical subjects and working life. (level B2)

Speaking

  • converse and discuss informally on topics of personal interest or related to studies, work or topical events. (level B1)
  • orally summarise texts of a general and/or specialist nature (level B1/B2)
  • give an individually prepared oral presentation of a specialised nature (level B2)

Writing

  • summarise texts of a general and/or specialised nature (level B1/B2)
  • write a factual report or an expository/argumentation text (level B1/B2).

  • INL1 - Essay, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • ÖVN1 - Assignment, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TENA - Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • ÖVN2 - Assignment, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • ANNA - Oral Examination, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

75% attendance. Oral and written examination (ÖVN1; 1,5 credits and ÖVN2; 1,5 credits), essay (INL1; 1,5 credits) and language proficiency (TENA; 3 credits)
