Course contents

Life and institutions

  • Introduction to Japanese geography, history, religion and art to understand the development of modern Japan.

Language

  • Introduction to phonetics, Kana-writing, basic principles for construction and use of kanji
  • Basic grammar and practice in speaking, reading and writing elementary Japanese with special focus on conventional phrases. Learning of 40 kanji-characters
  • The modern vocabulary, formal use of the language, male/female, body language etc.

After the course, the student should be able to:

  • specify in Swedish important facts on Japan and search for information related to its history, society, geography, culture and language.

Language

  • describe the development of the Japanese written language, fully master hiragana, and identify katakana
  • identify the distinguishing features of the Japanese language, such as grammar and social (pragmatic) language usage
  • introduce him/herself and others in very elementary Japanese
  • translate very simple words from Japanese to Swedish and vice versa
  • use the most common greetings and carry on simple everyday conversations applying the sentence structures studied

Specific prerequisites

General entrance requirements for university studies, i e completed upper secondary schooling. Applicants should have no preknowledge of  Japanese. More information is available on our website.

Students on the programmes with Japanese international profile have priority to the course.

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

  • TENB - Language Proficiency, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

75% attendance. Home assignment (HEM1; 1,5 credits), oral/written examinations (ANN1; 1,5 credits), final examination in two parts (TENA; 1,5 credits and TENB; 1,5 credits)
