Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

  • Elementary Swedish grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Pronunciation practice, practice in understanding, speaking and reading simple texts. Self-study oral repetition exercises and 1-2 times during the term with the teacher
  • Writing proficiency practice through self-correcting exercises and short essays
  • Practice texts contain some information about Sweden and Swedish culture

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

Listening comprehension

  • understand and report facts in an oral presentation on familiar subjects (level A2)

Reading comprehension

  • understand and give an account of information from various elementary (level A2)
  • identify facts from simple authentic texts (level A2)

Speaking

  • use the language with correct application of basic Swedish grammar and a basic command of the typical and distinctive features of Swedish pronunciation and prosody, in simple everyday situations and short presentations, and also describe elementary aspects of Swedish life and institutions (level A1)

Writing

  • use the language with correct application of basic Swedish grammar and a basic command of the typical and distinctive features of Swedish spelling in everyday situations, and also describe elementary aspects of Swedish life and institutions (level A1).

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

  • INL1 - Assignment, 0.8 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • INL2 - Assignment, 0.8 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • INL3 - Assignment, 0.7 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • INL4 - Assignment, 0.7 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • TEN1 - Examination, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

The written final exam is taken together with the students on the ordinary taught courses. Information about the exam dates is published on the Message Board of the Swell course. Students must sign up for the exam no later than two weeks before the exam date.
