Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Oral proficiency:

  • Pronunciation, intonation, fluency
  • The language and techniques of meetings, debates and presentations
  • Negotiating and problem-solving through role play

Written proficiency:

  • Writing reports, proposals, summaries, minutes, formal letters and CVs

The overall aim of the course is for the student to be able to use English as the main language in working life with a high degree of professionalism, variety and subtlety.

On completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • actively understand and use low-frequency words in English
  • adapt his/her language use to the communicative situation
  • distinguish implicit meanings in the language which may be context-dependent
  • convey ideas and opinions in situations (such as meetings and negotiations) encountered in working life
  • using correct, varied and appropriate language, give an individually prepared oral presentation on a specialised subject
  • present arguments in a large group on topical issues
  • write formal reports, e-mails and letters, and essays on topics of a specialised nature.

Specific prerequisites

Three years of academic studies.  A pass with top marks on the compulsory placement test before applying or a pass in Technical English, Intermediate Level (DS1301, DS1302, DS1303, DS1307) with the final grade 4, A or B.

Examination and completion

  • TEN1 - Language Proficiency, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade

75% attendance. Oral performance (ANN1; 3 credits), written assignments (ANN2; 3 credits), written examination TEN1; 3 credits).
