Course contents

Basic microbiology concepts and methodology

Microbial environments and risks for polymeric materials

Microorganisms as resources for renewable monomers and polymers

Biofilms

Ten lectures including discussion topics based on recent scientific publications. Preparation for giving and executing seminars

Describe the groups of microorganisms and their properties

Describe and explain growth and growth factors

Perform an isolation of microorganisms on group level

Analyse the viability of microorganisms in various environments

Describe and explain special fermentations as a potential source for monomers

Propose relevant microorganisms responsible for attacks on materials in complex environments

Propose and perform relevant procedure to isolate microorganisms from complex environments such as polymers from traditional and renewable polymers used in packaging, out- and indoor applications and polymers used in biomedical contexts

Analyse and evaluate the consequences of microbial attack on synthetic and natural polymers
