Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Students will have the opportunity to learn about various types of external funding. They will: be given insight into how this can relate to the aims and strategy of an employer (in this case, an institute of higher education); be shown the various methods to search for funding opportunities; discuss forming collaborative partnerships with other research teams; discuss career advantages related to funding. In addition, the student will learn how to evaluate proposals written by their colleagues, as this is a valuable part to understand about the process.

Intended learning outcomes

After completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe and discuss the relevance of external funding opportunities
  • Identify and categorize the different types of funding
  • Create a project budget
  • Plan, develop and write a grant proposal
  • Describe the importance of collaboration in research and proposals
  • Describe the expected impacts of research projects
  • Discuss the implications of IPR (intellectual property rights) issues
  • Evaluate the merits of the research proposals of others

Examination

    Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

    The student registers/reports his or her activity continuously and is continuously monitored by the examiner. The student also has to undertake project work which includes developing a grant proposal, working alone or within a small group, and taking part in the evaluation of a proposal from another student or group.
