“As a result of cognitive bias and a misguided alliance to the methods of natural science, HCI, has succeeded in obscuring the sociality of the user and the workplace. The challenge for design is one of getting to grips with the sociality of the workday world”.(A. Crabtree, 2003, p. 33).
The course is about the turn towards the social taken in systems design.
In particular the goal of the course is for participants to comprehend how to design cooperative systems taking into account the sociality of the user and the molding of technology to cooperative work.
The course provides a range of analytical concepts for purposes of design and evaluation of computer support for cooperative work (CSCW).
Furthermore, this course considers recent research and design initiatives with regard to communication technologies for the entertainment industries (games) and for communications between family and friends (social communities). The course covers the following topics: • Collaboration technology features and categories• Psychology of teams, social communities functioning • Ethnography in System Design• Awareness• Coordination mechanisms • Place and Space issues • Social navigation of information space • Privacy• Folksonomies• Communities• Evaluation of collaborative technologies Examples of collaborative technologies we treat in this course are: wikis, webblogs, computer games, collaborative editing and collaborative filtering.

Intended learning outcomes
Curriculum objectives
After having attended the course participants should be able to:
-Explain the emergence of groupware, its focus and scope
-Make clear how to approach a group interface
-Discuss technological and social issues in the use of groupware at work, school or at home.
-Argue the role of ethnography in the development and design of cooperative technologies
-Explain the concepts of awareness and mutual awareness
-Distinguish the notions of space and place in cooperative systems
-Assess the adequacy of the social navigation concept
-Analyze how artifacts facilitate or not awareness
-Discuss challenges in the design and evaluation of groupware and to exemplify them.

Specific prerequisites
For single course students not attending a regular KTH Programme the following is required:
- completed and documented upper secondary education including documented proficiency in English for applicants without knowledge of Swedish, shich is one of the general requisites for undergraduate studies in Sweden AND
- docuemtende university records corresponding to 180 hp/Bacherlor´s degree within Computer Science or equivalent.
