Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

During the course the following topics are treated:
-History and focus of groupware and CSCW research field
-Relation between
Ethnography/Ethnomethodology and System Design
-Workplace studies
-Designing for awareness
- Coordination mechanisms
- Place and Space in collaborative systems
- Social navigation of information space
- Collaborative filtering
- Co-located cooperative work
- Distributed cooperative work
- Design and evaluation of groupware

Intended learning outcomes

Curriculum objectives

After having attended the course participants should be able to:

-Explain the emergence of groupware, its focus and scope
-Make clear how to approach a group interface
-Discuss technological and social issues in the use of groupware at work, school or at home.
-Argue the role of ethnography in the development and design of cooperative technologies
-Explain the concepts of awareness and mutual awareness
-Distinguish the notions of space and place in cooperative systems
-Assess the adequacy of the social navigation concept
-Analyze how artifacts facilitate or not awareness
-Discuss challenges in the design and evaluation of groupware and to exemplify them.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

For single course students not attending a regular KTH Programme the following is required:

  • completed and documented upper secondary education including documented proficiency in English for applicants without knowledge of Swedish, shich is one of the general requisites for undergraduate studies in Sweden AND
  • docuemtende university records corresponding to 180 hp/Bacherlor´s degree within Computer Science or equivalent.

  • LAB1 - Laboratory Work, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
