Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course is composed of a number of lectures, projects and exams.

The three lectures bring up the contents which is included in the course: schemas, synonyms, encryption, certificates, asymmetric keys, password security, system databases, system views, data files, advanced importing tools, index and statistics.

The two projects bring up practical tasks within the contents of the course.

The three exams bring up theoretical tasks within the contents of the course split up into three parts.

Intended learning outcomes

The overall aim of the course is to provide a deeper understanding of how an MS SQL Server 2005 database works, of what it’s composed and how it is administrated.

To pass, the student shall be able to do the following after a completed course:

  • Describe the concepts Schema, Synonyms, Encryption, Certificate, Asymmetric keys, Symmetric keys, Password security, System databases, System views, Data files, Advanced import tools, Index and Statistics in MS SQL Server 2005.
  • Use data files to build the underlying data architecture in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Use advanced import tools to import data to a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Use synonyms to simplify management of data in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Use schemas and password security to increase and manage security in MS SQL Server 2005.
  • Use asymmetric keys, symmetric keys and certificates to encrypt data in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Use index and manage statistics to improve performance in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Use system databases and system views to extract information about status and structure in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.

For a higher grade, the student shall be able to do the following after a completed course:

  • Give a thorough description of how schemas and password security can improve security in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Give a thorough description of how keys and certificates can be used to improve data security in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
  • Give a thorough description of how system databases and system views can be used to supervise and to provide an overview of the structure in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Course 6B4064, Database administration for SQL-servers, basics, or corresponding knowledge collected elsewhere.

Completed and documented upper secondary education including Swedish B and English A or equivalent.

Literature

The course material consists of a course book (given at course start) and software from Microsoft.

Examination

  • PRO2 - Project, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • TEN3 - Examination, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • PRO1 - Project, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • TEN2 - Examination, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • TEN1 - Examination, 1.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

  • Passed exam 1 (TEN1;1,5p) – grade P-F.
  • Passed exam 2 (TEN2;1,5p) – grade A-F.
  • Passed exam 3 (TEN3;1,5p) – grade A-F.
  • Passed project 1 (PRO1;1,5p) – grade P-F.
  • Passed project 2 (PRO2;1,5p) – grade P-F.

The final grade is given when TEN1, PRO1 and PRO2 are Passed (grade P) and when TEN2 and TEN3 have the lowest grade of E.
