- The course gives a survey of the cycle of nuclear fuel;
- Reactor processes and reactor materials; production and refinement of reactor material. Isotopic enrichment on a technical scale.
- The chemistry of the actinides.
- The effect of radiation on the chemical environment in the nuclear reactor and its cooling system.
- Chemical aspects of the disposal of nuclear waste; immediate deposit, refinement, transmutation, safety and environmental aspects.

Course syllabus KD2090 (Autumn 2007–)Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
Intended learning outcomes
After completed course you should be able to:
- Outline the different steps in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and explain them in chemical terms.
- Explain the impact of the different steps on our environment and what biological consequences that could give.
- Relate actinide properties to their chemistry.
- Explain how the water chemistry influences the operation of a nuclear plant and relate that to how you should optimize the efficiency and at the same time give as high safety as possible.
- Suggest how to design a repository for spent nuclear fuel with given geological, hydrological, chemical and geographical conditions.
- Motivate positive and negative arguments for nuclear power with an environmental friendly view.
Literature and preparations
Specific prerequisites
Three years of study at the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, KTH, or equivalent.

Examination and completion
Grading scale
Examination
- TEN1 - Examination, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
- LAB1 - Practical Work, 1.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
Other requirements for final grade
Written examination, 4,5 credits
Completed laboratory course, 1,5 credit
Examiner
Ethical approach
- All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
- In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
- In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
