Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Informal learning in digital environments, students of today- who are they and how do they think? The development of Internet and the expression Web 2.0, personal learning environments. The use of social networks, bookmarking functions, blogs, wikis, podcasting and other forms of web based tools for informal learning, virtual worlds and teaching games, use of digital teaching platforms, interactive writing tablets and web based conference systems, open education resources (OER), IPR and Internet laws for educators and others who work in schools.

Intended learning outcomes

The course aims to give an understanding of what informal learning in digital environments can look like  and how Internet and ICT can be used to support learning within the school in the 21st Century.

  • After the course the student should be able to analyze and choose digital media as a support in teaching
  • After the course the student should be able to integrate and use digital media in his/her own activities
  • After the course the student should be able to discuss the pros and cons with integrating of ICT and Internet in your own activities

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

  • Completed upper secondary education including documented proficiency in Swedish corresponding to Swedish B and English corresponding to English A. For students who received/will receive their final school grades after 31 December 2009, there is an additional entry requirement for mathematics as follows: documented proficiency in mathematics corresponding to Mathematics A and
  • 30 university credits (hp) in any subject.

Recommended prerequisites

At least 30 credits (one semester of full-time study) from an undergraduate program for teachers, librarians or technology, nature, education, library, or engineering. Some computer experience and interest in education and technology.
The course is particularly aimed at people working as teachers, teacher educators and librarians in schools and colleges. It is also addressed to you as a visiting student to the teacher or librarian, or who otherwise want to enhance your digital skills. We encourage colleagues are looking together, but otherwise it's easy to get fellow students during the course, based on that we learn from each other.

The course is given at a distance and is completely web based. Required equipment: Computer with Internet

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

Course material
Training materials and textbooks are free and accessible via a password-protected course websites. Most of the literature is in English, but the course material is in Swedish.
Equipment
To follow the course you need to have some computer skills and access to broadband. The computer must be equipped with one of the most common browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari) and with free PDF reader program. You also need to have access to a simple webcam and a headset to follow certain parts of the course.

Personal user name for log in
By filling out an electronic form on the course website you will get your own personal username and password, then you can log on to the course. You will be able to immediately begin working with the course material and access to videos, instruction, reading lists and forums. You will also find exercises and assignments and can get support from your teachers at KTH Learning Lab and discuss with your fellow students. Be sure to choose the form corresponding to the course you are formally adopted to. Please note that you first must make a formal course registration at www.studera.nu as described above and prove your eligibility to be registered and be able to receive credit for the course .
