Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course gives an introduction to parts of the scientific communication process with a focus on the following three domains:

  • Scientific Communication: - communication channels for scientific information, the peer-review

    process, information retrieval in domains related to technology, science and medicine

  • Evaluation of Scientific Sources: primary and secondary sources, criteria for credibility, contrasting and arguing for different perspectives of a science-related question

  • Research Documentation: handling of sources of information in text, how to avoid plagiarism through good citation practice, bibliographical referencing

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to do the following:

  • identify and differentiate relevant sources of scientific information

  • evaluate and choose among sources of information from a source-critical perspective

  • use sources of information in a correct way in his/her own communication

The student should have general entry requirements as well as at least 30 credits from courses passed at KTH.
