Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

A speech within a their special field and exercises in different language contexts that require a very varied language. Discussion about differences of meaning within technical terminology. Analyses of technical and scientific texts within different specialist areas. Written production such as summaries, technical reports, essays, meeting minutes and formal letters. Overview and exercises on the relation between language for special purposes and standard language; importance of stylistic levels and language norms.

Intended learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes for the course are on the levels B2/C1 according to GERS, the joint European framework for language.

On completion of the course - in addition to what is evident from courses on lower level - the students should be able to:

Listening comprehension

· Understand longer speeches in a formal and advanced language (B2/C1)

Reading comprehension

· Understand longer text types within specialised fields (C1)

Oral communication and interaction

· take an active part in discussions and be able to explain and defend their opinions on well-known subjects (B2)

· In a varied language give an individually prepared talk of a specific nature (B2/C1)

· identify the differences in style between everyday and formal language and based on this adapt their oral language (C1)

Written production

· write letters and an essay of specialised nature (B2/C1)

· identify the differences in style between everyday and formal language and adapt their written language based on this (C1)

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Three years of academic studies. Completed and passed Spanish B1, equivalent older course or the equivalent knowledge showed through a compulsory placement test made before applying to the course.
