Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course is built on experience from entrepreneurs and follows the typical stages for new venture creation and includes:

  • real-world examples  and experience
  • analysis emphasis is placed on the creative process surrounding the development of a sound business idea
  • the identification of distinct market opportunities
  • the development of a strong business model.
  • teaching the students how to construct viable and feasible business plans for projects in any industry and business..
  • the concept of "bootstrapping" and how to apply it to ventures in different contexts 
  • action -oriented decision-making
  • the entrepreneur’s their journey and process of solving specific growth-related issues.

Intended learning outcomes

After this course you should be able to:

  • analyze and discuss the context of entrepreneurship
  • identify a business opportunity
  • develop and explain a business idea
  • use creativity techniques to extend and further a business idea
  • develop and write a complete business plan
  • demonstrate key skill sets for starting a venture
  • develop and argue for a complete business model.
  • describe the process and phases of launching a venture, its context and common pitfalls 
  • analyze and discuss the process of recruitment, team building and management in new ventures 
  • know how to approach key customers and gain visibility for a new venture 
  • argue for the importance of execution, decision making and action oriented management in entrepreneurship and innovation processes
  • analyze and explain why firms grow and what it means for society as a whole
  • explain different kinds of resources and its importance for firm growth
  • explain the concept of competitive advantage  and analyze the competitive advantages of high growth enterprises
  • describe the concept of international growth and explain for whom and why it may be appropriate
  • explain the concept of exit model, for whom and why a certain exit model would be appropriate

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

You must provide adacemic records of four semesters, 90 ECTS credits or equivalent within medicine, biomedicine, biotechnology, biology, chemistry or technology from an internationally recognized university. Proficiency in the English language should be documented by an internationally recognized test.

Examination

  • SEM1 - Oral Presentation, 0.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • TEN1 - Written Exam, 2.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

The examination is based on a written report and an oral presentation. Attendance at seminars/workshops and presentations is mandatory. Failure to attend can be compensated by an additional assignment chosen together with faculty and assessed individually.

Other requirements for final grade

The course is given together with the KI course 1QA103 and a grade will be given to students how take and pass both courses.

The examination will be provided during a period of two years after a close-down of the course.
