Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The project course enables to put into practice newly won knowledge in combustion engines or other relevant KTH courses

The focus of the project is chosen in discussions between the examiner and the students, who normally work in groups with different projects

The problem shall be relevant in such a way that it is stimulating for the students and preferably so interesting for the industry that the industry supply necessary extra test equipment and send representatives to listen to the compulsory official presentation.

The examiner, the department’s doctoral students and the employed laboratory personnel work as supervisors. The well equipped department workshop assists in manufacturing test equipment. In certain cases, also the industry assists with supervision and test equipment.

For projects based on simulation, licenses for modern software are supplied.

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to

  • practice on engine development or investigation with laboratory tests or simulation
  • apply knowledge gained in combustion engines or other relevant KTH courses
  • give a chance to contribute to development of the combustion engine, since all projects represent industrially relevant challenges
  • practice working in a project group

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

Written and oral report with theoretical background and detailed description of tests and simulations shall be presented. Results, conclusions and recommendations shall be included (ANN1; 6 cr). A requirement is that the report shall be easy to read and cover the most important points. An oral presentation for course participants, the department and invited interested shall be performed. Time for questions after the presentation is included (ANN2; 3 cr).
